چکیده

Identifying Social Norms Using Coordination Games: Why Does Dictator Game Sharing Vary? We explore the influence of social norms on behavior. To do so, we introduce a method for identifying norms, based on the property that social norms reflect social consensus regarding the appropriateness of different possible behaviors. We demonstrate that the norms we elicit, along with a simple model combining concern for norm-compliance with utility for money, predict changes in behavior across several variants of the dictator game in which behavior changes substantially following the introduction of minor contextual variations. Our findings indicate that people care not just about monetary payoffs but also care about the social appropriateness of any action they take. Our work also suggests that a social norm is not always a single action that should or should not be taken, but rather a profile of varying degrees of social appropriateness for different available actions. Norms, Frames and Prosocial Behavior in Games

We develop a unifying framework to understand the sensitivity of prosocial behavior to variation in context in games. We argue that individuals are motivated not only by material payoffs but also by how closely their actions correspond to social norms. In extensive form games with observable actions, we derive the implications of norm-dependent utility which depends on material payoffs, social ...

The Impact of Previous Action on Bargaining - An Experiment on the Emergence of Preferences for Fairness Norms

The communication of participants to identify an acceptable bargaining outcome in the Nash bargaining game is all about fairness norms. Participants introduce fairness norms which yield a better outcome for themselves in order to convince the other participant of their bargaining proposal. Typically, these fairness norms are in line with theoretical predictions, which support a wide variety of ...

What Behaviors are Disapproved? Experimental Evidence from Five Dictator Games

The literature on social norms has often stressed that social disapproval is crucial to foster compliance with norms and promote fair and cooperative behavior. With this in mind, we explore the disapproval of allocation decisions using experimental data from five dictator games with a feedback stage. Our data suggests that subjects are heterogeneous in their disapproval patterns, distinguishing...

Choices in Two-Person Interactions: The Effect of Amount and Social Distance on Offers in the Dictator and Ultimatum Games

Proposers in the Dictator Game and the Ultimatum Game often do not act as normative economic theory predicts. Offers are frequently higher than what would be considered income maximizing. The present study investigates two effects on the amount offered by the proposer. The first is whether the initial amount provided to the proposer systematically affects the amount offered (a magnitude effect)...

Fairness in Risky Environments: Theory and Evidence

The relationship between risk in the environment, risk aversion and inequality aversion is not well understood. Theories of fairness have typically assumed that pie sizes are known ex-ante. Pie sizes are, however, rarely known ex ante. Using two simple allocation problems—the Dictator and Ultimatum game—we explore whether, and how exactly, unknown pie sizes with varying degrees of risk (“endowm...
